I would like to address a great article in
the new issue of “Mustang Monthly” magazine that has been driving me mad
for years: Ford dealerships attaching above sticker cost to new and
specialized vehicles, then giving it fancy definitions such as “Market
Value Adjustment Cost” or “Special Item Transport Fees…” Allow me to
clarify these fees and give them a few other descriptions: “Gouging,” and
“Greed,” come to mind. What possible reason would dealerships have to do
this to a price that has already been set at the top of Ford
Marketing? None, plain and simple. But in this politically correct yet
common sense lacking world we live in (think Barrett Jackson!) dealerships
have targeted those buyers who won’t mind paying an extra upwards of
$20,000 on some vehicles – whoa, did I just say TWENTY THOUSAND ?! –
because they know these buyers are out there. And what it has done and
will continue to do is price out the everyday car guy who has made this
hobby strong from day one by making it impossible for him to touch a new
Cobra, or new Bullitt model Mustang in the near future. Shame on Ford for
allowing this, and they can control it, but they won’t. A 1968 Shelby has
earned its worth by time and looks alone; a 2008 Shelby has not, and is
grossly overpriced to begin with. Give me a good old fashioned 1966
Mustang Coupe anytime!

Our April cruise was a huge success, the
weather was great and attendance was close to 100 vehicles. The Charcoal
Pit was packed, the music outside with DJ Bob Burke was the best and
everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. I want to extend a thanks to
Vic, Bill, Bob and anyone I may have missed who got things rolling
early. It seems that staying on the side of the lot will be our best bet
for future cruises, and we will make the best of it there. I’m happy to
see some different vehicles coming in, and some younger guys with newer
vehicles that may not be the “classics” we are used to, but certainly
will be the future of cruising in our area, so we must embrace them. Who
knows, maybe we can get them over to the other side one day, away from a
1986 Pontiac and into a classic Mustang…?
Our 1st
Mustang & Ford Spring Show at Sheridan Ford on Kirkwood Highway is set
for Sunday, May 18, 2008. The classes will remain as they are for now,
trophies have been ordered, as have dash plaques. Rick Langshaw has
designed a great flyer for the show which we have been posting
everywhere we can. We will do a small newspaper ad for the show the
Friday before, as well as Sheridan running a large ad in the paper the
Saturday before the show. This should lead to a very successful show as
well as what I am hoping is a long run there at Sheridan. Please pass
the word to all your Ford friends, and anyone who may have attended the
Winner shows in the past. We’ll talk about any show ideas and get
everything set at the may meeting, which I’m hoping to see all of you
at. Oh! And congratulations to Dave Halliday on his 1970 Mustang
Convertible being selected as the Spring Show feature car. See you at
Damon’s everyone!
